How to Set Posts for a Deck on a Helical Pier (Pile) Foundation
If you're considering building a deck, using a helical pier foundation system from GoliathTech can be an excellent choice. Once the helical piles are installed, the next important aspect is choosing the appropriate head attachment/saddle bracket to secure the deck posts. A properly installed bracket ensures the stability and safety of the deck.
Types of Attachments/Saddle Brackets
GoliathTech offers many different types of head attachments/saddle brackets for deck posts, here are the three main common ones:
Flat plate:
- This is a simple option where the deck post sits directly on a square flat surface and is held in place using lag bolts bolted from underneath.
- Flat plate brackets are suitable for smaller decks or decks with low loads.
- They are easy to install and are an affordable option for those on a tight budget.
- Many sizes are available depending on the beam or post size.
U bracket:
- U brackets are available in different sizes and are used depending on the size of the post. If using a U saddle bracket, typically through bolts would be used.
- The U bracket is a more robust option than the flat plate and is usually used when there are larger lateral loads on the posts/beams.
- U brackets provide excellent stability and are an excellent choice for decks built in areas with strong winds or heavy snow loads.
Adjustable vs Fixed Heads:
- GoliathTech offers both adjustable and fixed heads, which refers to the type of connection to the pile itself. Adjustable heads are made adjustable through the threaded rod inserted in the pile base cap.
- Adjustable heads are an excellent option for contractors as they can fine-tune height adjustment easily and save time and frustration.
- Adjustable heads are a flexible option as they can be adjusted to level the deck on uneven terrain. This type of bracket is installed on the helical pier (pile) and allows for the height of the deck post to be adjusted as needed, even after the structure is built.
- Fixed heads are used when larger loads are being applied, where there are higher lateral loads or as a more economical option to the adjustable head.
Installing Flat Plate Attachment
When installing a flat plate attachment, the GoliathTech certified installer will simply bolt the base to the pile using custom manufactured bolts. Once the base is secured, the flat plate, which is welded to a threaded rod, is screwed into the base to the desired height. The deck post can be placed onto the bracket, and lag bolts can be driven from underneath to hold the post in place.
Installing U Saddle Bracket
Once again, the certified installer bolts the base to the pile using custom manufactured bolts. Then, the correct U bracket size is screwed into the base using the threaded rod. The size of the U will depend on the beam or post size.To install a U bracket, you'll need to slide the bracket over the helical pile, and use through bolts to secure it to the pier (pile). Once the bracket is installed, the deck post can be placed into the U-shaped bracket and secured using through bolts.
Using Adjustable Heads
Adjustable heads are an excellent option for decks built on uneven terrain and are a huge time saver in many situations. GoliathTech has a unique patented system that allows the pile head to be adjustable and at the same time offer uplift resistance to not only make sure your struction is well supported but also to make sure it is kept firmly anchored to the ground.
Adjustable heads make it easy to level to the desired height for your deck posts, which saves a lot of time and frustrations.
