GoliathTech University: Tutorial 20
So, you’ve heard of helical piles and are convinced they would be the best solution for your construction project, but you’re wondering if you or your contractor could install them? Well, there are a couple of key factors to consider before trying to take this on. The short answer is that your project requires a certified helical pile installer.
People are often misled by the simplistic design of the helical pile, since, let’s face it: it’s a round tube with a welded helix on it. But, rest assured, they are much more complex than one might think.
THE MATH BEHIND HELICAL PILES
The first thing you need to consider is the math behind our proven load charts that show a correlation between torque and capacity. There’s a complex mathematical formula used to determine how much torque to apply to the pile depending on the load to support. So if you don’t have those conversion numbers, then how will you know how much your piles can actually support?
Below are two examples of torque reading devices.
CALIBRATE, CALIBRATE
Another important factor is that our helical piles need to be installed using calibrated equipment, typically using a mini excavator. You might think, my contractor has an excavator, could he not install them with his machine?
What distinguishes the equipment that our installers use is that the excavators are mounted with a calibrated hydraulic anchor drive head, to which are attached unique adaptors that fit with our GoliathTech helical piles.
And last but certainly not least is training!
